Welcome to the North East’s only commercial food waste anaerobic digestion facility...
We are the North East’s first commercial food waste anaerobic digestion facility. Working with the private and public sector we are committed to recycling and reusing the region’s food waste to generate electricity, heat and biofertiliser. With proven expertise in the recycling and renewables industry you can be assured that your waste is being treated in a safe, secure and environmentally friendly way.
...into clean, green, sustainable energy.
Turning recycled food waste into new and useable products is at the heart of the Emerald Biogas offering, but while most anaerobic digestion plants generate electricity, the accompanying heat which is produced is often lost or cannot be transferred and used effectively. At Emerald Biogas, we use both the power and heat, benefitting the surrounding community.
The power we generate is fed directly into the National Grid. In addition, the heat created as a result of the process is fully utilised by the local industrial and business community.
And here’s how we do it...
The process removes all traces of plastic, glass and metal before pasteurising the waste to meet stringent regulations. The waste is then transferred to large digestion tanks where anaerobic digestion takes place - a natural biological process within a fully sealed, air free environment. Millions of bacteria ‘feed’ on the organic fraction of the waste to produce a methane rich ‘biogas’, which can then be used for heating and to produce electricity.
Rendering
Animal by-products are defined as entire bodies or parts of animals, products of animal origin or other products obtained from animals, which are not intended for human consumption.
The animal by-products that we collect from farms, butchers, abattoirs and meat manufacturing facilities by law, must be kept out of the food chain.
At rendering facilities, valuable resources, including tallow, which is a form of fat, as well as meat and bone meal are produced. Depending upon the source of these materials their end use can range from pet foods and biofuels, to fertilisers, and soap and organic chemicals.
Anaerobic Digestion...
Anaerobic Digestion (AD) is a natural biological process that uses micro-organisms to break down organic matter to produce valuable renewable resources such as biofertiliser and power.
At Emerald Biogas, we currently process up to 115,000 tonnes of food waste and organic based material to produce gas and electricity which is supplied directly to the national grid and a PAS110 approved bio-fertiliser.
We are conscious that the environmental benefit of supplying our biofertiliser to farmers can be eroded by transportation. So we have committed to supplying our product exclusively to the local farming community close to our facility.
